Meet the Maker

Hello There,

My name is Ella Reiss (phonetically, Rice) and I am the sole maker and artist behind Ella Jean Leather. I am originally from Wisconsin, born in Milwaukee and mostly raised just west of there in Waukesha. I do sometimes have a slight accent and thoroughly enjoy cheese. Ask me sometime to say, “Bag”.

It was during my sophomore year of college where I had the right doors open to move west. I feel as if I was following a spiritual connection that was instilled in me during a family trip to Yellowstone and Cody, Wyo in 2010. I landed in Fort Collins, joined the ranch horse team, and started Ella Jean Leather spring of 2021. I completed my Bachelors of Science in Agricultural Business from Colorado State University in the fall of 2021. I now reside in Loveland, Colorado and do not have plans to uproot.

How I got into leather work was while working for Walsh Products in Wisconsin just out of high school. I was involved in the production process of predominantly leather halters. It was there I learned how to work with leather and came to appreciate English Bridle Leather. You will see me gravitate towards it and specifically Wickett & Craig as the tannery. An homage to my start at Walsh.

After I moved 1000 miles away I could not stop thinking about this business venture. I felt creative, I wanted to build with my hands, appreciate my own art and be able to use it. So, one day I bought a box of random tools and scraps for $50 off some nice woman and never looked back. Since then I have largely taught myself through trial and error, YouTube university and the guidance of trusted friends.

I pride myself for my attention to detail, keen eye for quality and seeing my work being used. I firmly believe that quality goods take precedent over run-of-the-mill items. Hopefully you find that my gear gives you a story to tell. Whether it hangs on your wall, goes with you every ride or step of they way; I hope to build items that stand lifetimes.

My intention of Ella Jean Leather is that the business will evolve with me as I age, grow wiser and refine my skills. The name will not change even though my last name might, and the business will rest with me one day. This is my outlet and I cherish each item I get to bring to life, see being used or use it myself cowgirlin’. It is a blessing to be able to share with you my story.

Bless you and Keep You,
Ella Jean Reiss
